Electric trucking startup New Energy Transport has secured a $5 million investment, paving the way for the introduction of electric trucks on Australian roads as early as this year. This significant funding will not only accelerate the deployment of their electric prime movers but also enable the establishment of mobile charging stations, marking a pivotal moment in the country's transition to low-emission freight transport.
The startup's plans are particularly timely, given the recent surge in diesel prices following Middle Eastern conflict and the impending end of the fuel excise discount. Daniel Bleakley, co-chief executive of New Energy Transport, emphasizes the growing demand for low-emission transport options, attributing it to the rising costs of traditional freight and the increasing environmental consciousness among transport buyers. With this investment, the company aims to meet this demand by providing reliable electric road freight services before the end of the year, surpassing their initial timeline.
The $5 million investment, backed by venture capital firm Jekara Group, will facilitate the early deployment of the electric truck fleet, originally scheduled for mid-2027. This funding will also support the construction of a high-powered charging hub in Wilton, southwest of Sydney, and an additional six ultra-fast charging units that can be strategically placed along freight corridors. The modular and mobile nature of these charging units allows for quick redeployment, enabling the company to expand its reach into regional and rural Australia, including agricultural hubs in Yass, Wagga Wagga, and Griffith.
Furthermore, New Energy Transport plans to establish fixed-charging depots in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Brisbane by 2031, solidifying its commitment to comprehensive charging infrastructure. This comprehensive approach addresses the main bottleneck in low-emissions freight, as highlighted by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency in 2025.
